Did you know grandparent caregivers are twice as likely as their peers to be clinically depressed and one-third have a disability or a spouse with a disability?
The economic factor is really key: 1 in 3 had household incomes less than $15,000 per year. Most Children's Aid Societies do not provide foster care payments to children that were apprehended from their parents and placed in their grandparents care. (They do provide payment in the U.S. and 34 states also subsidize legal guardianship so the children canbe moved out of the child protection system.)
The kinship children in their grandparent's care tend to do very well. A large American studied showed kids in their grandparent's care had as good health and behavior outcomes as children who
lived with both their biological parents.
U.S has a National Family Caregiver Support Act http://www.aoa.gov/prof/aoaprog/caregiver/careprof/lawsregs/Title3eAoA_pf.asp where 10% of those funds are allocated to assist grandparent caregivers with services, counseling, respite care etc.
More to come...
